Murkomen Calls for Fresh Police Reservist Vetting in Kerio Valley
The Interior and National Administration Cabinet Secretary, Kipchumba Murkomen, has instructed for a new round of verification for all National Police Reservists (NPRs) currently operating in the Kerio Valley area.
At a security briefing in the region, the CS mentioned that individuals who successfully complete the assessment will undergo further training within the service.
He additionally revealed a change in policy, indicating that NPRs would now come directly under the authority of the Officer Commanding Police Stations (OCS).
The CS objected to the actions of NPR officers involved in illegal activities, stating that steps have been initiated to remove them.
"We are establishing suitable camps for NPRs in Baringo, West Pokot, and Elgeyo/Marakwet," said Murkomen.
Regarding social benefits, Murkomen stated that every NPR will be enrolled with the Social Health Authority (SHA), and their family members will receive preferential treatment for government-funded scholarships.
The CS stated that leaders in charge of operations will have the authorization to carry weapons upon submitting an application.
"The welfare and career advancement of chiefs will be reconsidered. Chiefs facing disciplinary problems will be suspended and subjected to the legal process," stated the CS.
Through the Public Service Commission, he stated that promotions for chiefs will be determined by their merits.
He observed that the government has established the new Kerio Valley Sub-County with the appointment of the Deputy County Commissioner (DCC), who has received several vehicles. He mentioned that the Officer Commanding Police District (OCPD) along with other staff members will be assigned to this location shortly.
"We plan to construct sub-county offices in Chesongoch during the upcoming financial year. Land conflicts and highway robberies are becoming significant security concerns in the Loruk and Kerio areas; we will take firm measures against those responsible," stated the Cabinet Secretary.
Murkomen urged the local community and leaders to collaborate with security forces to uphold tranquility in the area.
It’s unfortunate that certain individuals obstruct roads during security operations. In our area, we’ve built several security roads; some are still being constructed, and many more are planned for the near future. There are members of the community who are undermining peace efforts, so we’re intensifying our operations to apprehend these individuals.
The gathering held at Chesongoch Catholic Church Centre assembled security personnel from regional, county, sub-county, and ward levels.
